It was a historic night in Minneapolis Tuesday. Behind junior guard Dominique Kelley's career-high 22 point effort and freshman point guard Lindsey Moore's career-high 11 assists, the #1-seeded Nebraska Women's Basketball team defeated #8 UCLA 83-70 to advance to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 for the first time in team history. National Player of the Year candidate Kelsey Griffin posted her 39th career double-double and 19th of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She became just the second player in team history to amass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Griffin was named one of 12 finalists for the Wade Trophy earlier in the week.

Even as the Kansas City region's number one seed, Nebraska was the only team in the region to play outside their home state in both of the first two rounds and was the only team in region to have to beat a ranked team to reach the Sweet 16. Next up for the Huskers is a Regional Semi-Final meeting with the Kentucky Wildcats Sunday night.

As big of a surprise Nebraska has been this season, Kentucky might be able to stake a valid claim to pulling a bigger shocker to make it to round three of the Big Dance. The Wildcats were predicted to finish ELEVENTH in the pre-season Southeastern Conference poll and defied all odds by finishing second in the league and running to a 27-7 overall record. Kentucky's win over Liberty last week was their first win in 17 years in the Big Dance. It's pretty impressive for a team that finished last season with a 16-16 record. (By comparison, Nebraska finished 15-16 last year.) #4 seeded-Kentucky defeated #13 Liberty 83-77 last Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky. The Wildcats advanced to Kansas City by besting #5 Michigan State 70-52 Monday evening.

6-1 junior forward Victoria Dunlap is the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year. She overcame an upset stomach and an ailing right ankle to finish with 21 points and eight rebounds in the win over the Spartans. Dunlap leads UK in scoring (17.7 ppg) rebounding (8.3 rpg) blocks and steals. 5-9 guard A'dia Mathies (ODD-ee-uh MATH-is) was named SEC Freshman of the Year. She set a school record for points in an NCAA game with 32 against Liberty in the first round. Mathies led all SEC freshmen in steals and is second on the team in scoring (13.6 ppg). 5-6 junior point guard Amber Smith's primary job on defense in UK's system is to shadow, bother and tire the opponent. She leads the team in assists and adds 9.3 ppg. 5-11 senior Amani Franklin adds 7.4 ppg and like Smith and Mathies has started all but one game this season. 5-7 sophomore Keyla Snowden rounds out Kentucky's probable starting lineup. She leads the team in three-pointers (47) and adds 6.6 ppg.

Kentucky plays a high-pressure, trapping, up-tempo game defensively designed to disrupt their opponents. The Wildcats have 10 players who average over 10 minutes per game.

3rd year UK head coach Matthew Mitchell guided has guided the Wildcats to a perfect home record this season (17-0) and school records for the number of league wins (11) and overall wins (27).

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Kentucky 2-1, but UK holds a 1-0 lead in NCAA Tournament games. The Wildcats defeated the Huskers 98-92 in the first round of the NCAA West Regional in Los Angeles in 1999. Kentucky is 4-7 all-time vs. teams from the Big 12 Conference.
