Session 2: Brester, Dwyer Advance to Quarters at NCAA Championships

Qwest Center Omaha - Seniors Craig Brester (197) and Stephen Dwyer (174) each advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday night to remain in the hunt for individual national championships. Neither wrestler surrendered a point, as Brester defeated Purdue's Logan Brown 7-0 in the 197-pound bracket, and Dwyer shut out Missouri's Dorian Henderson 5-0 at 174 pounds.

Brester will be wrestling in the quarterfinals for the fourth time of his career, including a runner-up finish in 2009. Dwyer's qualification is the second as a Husker after he also began the 2008 national tournament with a 2-0 mark, before slipping to eighth place. Each senior is now one victory away from 2010 All-America status.

In Dwyer's second round win Friday night, he overcame a feisty Dorian Henderson (Missouri) in a match that included two technical violations on the Tiger wrestler. The first violation was the only point awarded in the first two periods, giving Dwyer a 1-0 lead heading into the third. After amassing 1 minutes, 47 seconds in riding time in the second period, Dwyer extended his lead in the third with a pair of takedowns and an escape to give him the 5-0 victory. Dwyer will face off against Jarion Beets of Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals. Beets' day was highlight by a first round upset of fifth-seeded Scott Glasser (Minnesota), 14-7.

After pinning Rider's Tyler Smith in his first match Friday, Brester was dominant from the first whistle in his second round match against Logan Brown (Purdue) en route to a 7-0 victory. The senior jumped out to a 6-0 lead in their first period and rode Brown for riding time the entire second period. Brester escaped in the third for his seventh point. In the quarterfinals, Brester will match up with seventh-seeded Anthony Biondo of Michigan. Like Brester, Biondo pinned his first round opponent on Friday.

Sophomore heavyweight Tucker Lane also wrestled in the second round for NU, but was unable to pull off the upset over fourth-seeded Konrad Dudziak of Duke, falling 4-3. The score was tied at 3-3 heading into the third period before Dudziak earned an escape in the third period to go up by one.  Looking for a takedown in the last 30 seconds, Lane was able to cause a stalling warning on Dudziak, but could not register the deciding takedown. Lane will move to the consolation bracket and face off against Central Michigan's Jarod Trice.

Two Huskers were wrestling in consolation matches Friday night after falling in their first round matches. Redshirt freshman Josh Ihnen (184) bounced back in the consolation first round to defeat Mike Miller of Central Michigan, 3-1, and advance to the second round of consolation matches at 184 pounds. Junior Mike Koehnlein was eliminated from the tournament after falling to Dalton Jenson of Iowa State, 9-5, in the first round of consolation matches at 141 pounds.

Brester and Dwyer will wrestle their quarterfinal matches in Friday's first session at 9:30 a.m., while Ihnen and Lane will look to continue their trek through the consolation bracket.
