Session 1: Huskers Win Three in Session I

Omaha - Nebraska's returning national qualifiers each started the 2010 NCAA Championships on a positive note as three of the Huskers' five participants earned first round wins Thursday at Qwest Center Omaha.

Sophomore Tucker Lane ended the first session by outlasting Virginia's John Danilkowicz in a 2-1 decision at Heavyweight. In his second NCAA appearance, Lane reversed his fortunes from a year ago by winning his first round match via an escape point and 1:17 riding time advantage.

Shortly before Lane's win, senior Craig Brester (197) nailed down his 11th fall of the season, pinning Rider's Tyler Smith in 2 minutes, 59 seconds. Brester, who is in search of his third All-America honor, made quick work of Smith with his ninth first period fall in 2009-10.

Also aiming for high honors, fourth-seeded Stephen Dwyer cruised to a 6-0 decision over Utah Valley's Brad Darrington at 174 pounds. Dwyer had his first takedown 2 1/2 minutes into the match and built his riding time advantage in the second period, not allowing Darrington to escape. He finished off his first round victory with another takedown in the final minute.

Junior Mike Koehlein and Josh Ihnen, both newcomers on this year's NU squad, dropped first round matches and will now compete in the Wrestleback divisions of their respective brackets.

Wrestling resumes at 6:30 p.m. tonight with second-round matches and the first round in the consolation bracket.
