The Nebraska men's tennis earned its highest ranking in school history after it moved up to No. 25 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released on Tuesday, March 16.
The Huskers jumped 11 spots from No. 36 after going 3-0 last weekend against No. 65 Oregon, No. 23 BYU and Utah. So far this season, NU has defeated four ranked opponents while compiling an 11-3 overall record.
Nebraska Head Coach Kerry McDermott said it is an honor to earn a top 25 ranking, but he hopes the Huskers can continue their climb up the poll.
"It's a huge honor for this program," McDermott said. "It's a tribute to the team for their hard work and dedication with sticking to the principles of Husker tradition and what it stands for. (Assistant) Coach (Joerg) Barthel has done a tremendous job of keeping this team focused throughout the year. We have played a tough, competitive schedule that has allowed us to play some quality teams and to achieve this high ranking. We are going to keep improving and hopefully keep moving up the rankings. No way are we satisfied. We are going to keep working hard."
Two Huskers also appeared in the singles rankings as junior Calin Paar moved up to No. 81, while sophomore Christopher Aumueller is now ranked at No. 82. In the doubles rankings, the Huskers' No. 1 doubles team of Paar and David Bendheim are ranked at No. 73.
Six Big 12 teams were represented in the top 25 including No. 5 Texas, No. 8 Baylor, No. 16 Texas Tech, No. 17 Oklahoma and No. 18 Texas A&M. The only Big 12 team not represented in the national rankings is Oklahoma State which checked in at No. 54.
The Huskers will continue their nine-match road trip on Wednesday, when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to take on the No. 22 Virginia Tech Hokies. Match time between the Huskers and Hokies is set for 2 p.m. You can view live stats for the match by clicking on the link at the top of the page.
