Florence, Ariz. - The Nebraska women's golf team fired an opening-round 304 and is tied for sixth place after the first round of its own 2010 Northern Migration Invitational Monday evening.
The Huskers, hosting the tournament at the 6,227-yard, par-72 layout of the Poston Butte Golf Club, are six strokes behind the team leader, Texas-San Antonio, who totaled a 298. Idaho and Kansas each recorded 299, while Minnesota and East Tennessee State scored 300, and Iowa State scored a 304 to round out the top six.
Freshman Erin Sharpee and junior Mary Kate Bird paced the Huskers with two-over-par 74s. They are tied for 11th place overall. Maddie Sheils recorded a 76 and is tied for 30th, while JC Stevenson capped the scoring lineup with an 80 (T66th). Charlotte Wendner rounded out the NU lineup with an 83, putting her in a tie for 88th.
Kayla Knopik shot 80 (T66th) and Carolyn Schorgl shot 83 (T88th) playing as individuals.
Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho turned in a 68 late in the afternoon to claim the overall lead. Iowa State's Victoria Stefansen is second with a two-under-par 70.
The teams hit the course for round two on Tuesday with tee times starting at 7:10 a.m. (Mountain time). The Huskers will be grouped with East Tennessee State, Iowa State and Florida International, and will tee off at 9:34 a.m. Huskers.com will have a full recap after Tuesday's second round and Wednesday's final round.
