Lincoln - The Nebraska women's basketball team earned its first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and is headed to Minneapolis, Minn., for the first and second rounds, March 21-23.
The Huskers (30-1, 16-0 Big 12) joined Connecticut, Stanford and Tennessee as a No. 1 seed in the 64-team 2010 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, when the bracket was announced live on ESPN Monday evening.
Nebraska, which captured its first-ever Big 12 regular-season title, claimed an at-large bid into the tournament, making its third appearance in the last four seasons under 2010 Big 12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year Connie Yori.
"We're obviously excited about being a No. 1 seed," Yori said. "It is an honor to mentioned right up there with UConn, Tennessee and Stanford, and it is a result of all the hard work and dedication our players have put into this season."
The Huskers, who tied a Big 12 record by winning 30 consecutive games before falling to No. 11 Texas A&M in the semifinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday, could be headed back to Kansas City for a regional round if they can advance through the first and second rounds at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
Nebraska will face No. 16 seed Northern Iowa in the first round on Sunday, March 21, at 6 p.m., in a game televised live on ESPN2 and ESPN360.com. The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament champion Panthers earned a trip to the tournament by knocking off Creighton on Sunday in the tournament final.
If the Huskers can get by the Panthers, NU will face the winner of Minneapolis' other first-round game featurning No. 8 UCLA and No. 9 NC State. The Bruins and Wolfpack will square off at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. The second-round game is set for Tuesday, March 23 at 8:30 p.m.
