22-0. Getting to that lofty record took a lot of hard work for the Nebraska Women’s Basketball team Wednesday night in Lawrence against Kansas. The Jayhawks had only lost one previous game in 12 tries at historic Allen Fieldhouse and they gave the Huskers an inspired effort. NU overcame its largest second-half deficit of the season, trailing by five points with eight minutes remaining, and prevailed 67-60. With the win, the 3rd-ranked Huskers remain, along with UConn, one of two undefeated teams in the nation and sit atop the Big 12 Conference standings with a 9-0 league mark. 6-2 senior National Player of the Year candidate Kelsey Griffin posted her Big12-leading 12th double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds. 5-9 senior guard Yvonne Turner hit three huge three-pointers and added 15 points. 5-8 freshman guard Lindsey Moore make big defensive plays, including recording all three of her career-high tying three steals in the final eight minutes. Her six assists pushed her season total to 103, becoming the first Husker with 100 assists in a season since 2005-06. Next up for the Huskers is a 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon road game in Columbia against Missouri.
The Tigers fell below .500 for the season with a low-scoring 37-33 loss at Kansas State Wednesday night. Mizzou has lost five games in a row and 10 of their last 11 games. Their only win in ten Big 12 Conference games was a 70-62 upset of Baylor on January 23 in Columbia. The 33 points against KSU tied for the program’s lowest point total, matching the 33 points the Tigers scored in a loss to Grand View in 1974, the program’s first year of existence. Offense has been a problem for MU in their last two games. In a loss against Iowa State last Saturday, the Tigers only scored 39 points, while shooting 24 percent from the floor, the same percentage they shot Wednesday night against K-State.
6-1 senior forward Jessra Johnson is Mizzou’s leading scorer and rebounder this season. However, she has been hindered by an illness that had caused her to miss practice the three days prior to the game at KSU. Johnson did not start, played just 15 minutes and scored only three points against the Wildcats, going 1-11 from the field. For the season, Johnson averages 12.2 ppg and 6.1 rpg.
5-11 senior forward Amanda Hanneman is MU’s biggest three-point threat. She has made 43 triples and is second on the team in scoring (9.6 ppg). 6-3 sophomore forward Christine Flores has emerged as a pleasant surprise this season and has started eight games, leads the team in blocked shots and is tied with Hanneman for second on the squad with 9.6 ppg. 6-2 junior Shakara (Shaq) Jones has started all 23 games for MU this season. She averages 9.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg. 5-8 junior guard RaeShara Brown leads the Big 12 Conference in steals per game (3.2) and is ranked in the top 10 nationally. She has started every games this season, leads the team in assists and adds 9.1 ppg. Mizzou has suffered season-ending injuries to projected starting point guard Bekah Mills and backup Bailey Gee, 5-6 senior Toy Richbow has had to start all 23 games this season at the point. She averages 3.9 ppg.
Cindy Stein is in her 12th season as Missouri head coach. She has led Mizzou to three NCAA Tournaments, including the Sweet 16 in 2001.
