This magical season just continues to get better and better. On Saturday, the third consecutive home crowd of over 10,000 (10,889) watched Nebraska and #12 Texas A&M compete in a tough, physical battle. The Huskers’ 71-60 win over the Aggies gave NU two wins over highly-ranked teams in four days and improved Nebraska’s season-opening winning streak to a Big 12 Conference record 21 wins. 6-2 senior National Player of the Year candidate Kelsey Griffin posted her 31st career double-double and 11th of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead NU. The Huskers are 21-0, lead the Big 12 Conference by three full games (8-0) and have moved to their highest ranking ever in the AP Poll. Nebraska moved ahead of Notre Dame Monday afternoon and are now ranked 3rd heading into Wednesday evening’s game at Kansas in Lawrence.
Kansas is 14-7 on the season and has won three straight games to even their league mark at 4-4, tied for sixth. KU was picked second in the league in the preseason coaches’ poll. However, the Jayhawks suffered a huge, heartbreaking loss when pre-season Big 12 Player of the Year Danielle McCray was lost for the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL just prior to the Kansas State game last Saturday. It was the second starter lost for KU this season, as freshman point guard Angel Goodrich was fallen by an ACL injury in early January. Kansas rallied without their two injured starters and avenged an earlier loss to Kansas State 70-60 Saturday in Lawrence. It was only the 2nd KU win in their last 18 games against their in-state rivals.
With the injury to McCray, 6-2 sophomore forward Aishah Sutherland is now KU’s leading scorer. Sutherland is one of two ?Hawks to start every game this season. She averages 10.5 ppg and also leads the team in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and blocked shots. 5-11 senior guard Sade Morris has also started every game and averages 10.0 ppg. 6-3 freshman Carolyn Davis made her sixth straight start of the season against K-State Saturday and posted her second career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She averages 6.4 ppg. 5-11 freshman Monica Engelman made the most of her first career start against KSU. She led the team with 16 points and added four rebounds and five assists. Engelman averages 5.0 ppg. 5-10 senior guard LaChelda Jacobs rounds out KU’s probable starting lineup. She has started six games and averages 1.6 ppg.
Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson is in her sixth season in Lawrence. She led KU to the 2009 WNIT championship game. She previously coached at Virginia Tech where she led the Hokies to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
KU leads the all-time series with Nebraska 48-28 and has defeated the Huskers in four of the last five games, including the last two in Lawrence. NU faced the Jayhawks three times last season, losing the final two games, 70-57 in Lawrence and 61-56 in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City. Sade Morris had a game-high 24 points to lead KU while Cory Montgomery had 20 points and nine rebounds to pace the Huskers in OKC.
