Lincoln ? The Nebraska combined eventers wrapped up the Husker Multi Challenge on Saturday at the Devaney Center Indoor Track. Rachel Butler won the women’s pentathlon, while Teran Walford and Derrell Bradford each placed in the top five in the men’s heptathlon.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Butler, who sat fourth after four events, capitalized in the long jump with the top leap in the field at 19-0 to move into second place overall with only the 800 meters to go. The junior then ran the second best time in the 800 at 2:25.84 to score 746 points and win the pentathlon with an overall score of 3,659, as she held off Nebraska-Omaha’s Shannon Moore by 29 points.
On the men’s side, Teran Walford made his way up the standings throughout day two after he entered the day ranked eighth. Walford, who set three personal bests on day one, set PR’s in all three events on day two, including the 60 hurdles (8.57), pole vault (14-1 1/4) and 1,000 meters (2:51.91). Overall, Walford secured third-place honors with a personal-best score of 4,953, topping his previous best of 4,637. For Bradford, he entered day two ranked fifth and finished fifth with a personal-best score of 4,707, betting his previous best of 4,664.
The Huskers will now prepare for the 35th Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, set for Friday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. and then starting again on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Noon. One of the most talent-filled meets of the indoor season, the Huskers will welcome fellow Division I teams Ohio State, Arizona, Iowa, Colorado State, Drake, Kansas, Rice, Saint Louis and UTEP.
