Erin Davis has had quite the week. After posting a 10.0 on vault last Friday against Minnesota and Illinois, the junior from Round Rock, Texas was honored as Big 12 Event-Specialist of the Week. It was the first such award for Davis, who is also tied for first in the national vault rankings. We thought we'd catch up with the latest Husker gymnast in the spotlight in this edition of "Hangin' with the Huskers."
How do you guys feel after starting out the season 3-0?
"As a team, we did really well. We started out with a solid meet. There were some little things we could work on, but we started off way better than last year. The same thing happened last weekend (in competition). We had a couple of misses on beam, but we still went to floor and were able to shake it off."
What kind of things have you worked on in practice this week to prepare for the meet on Sunday?
"We worked on sticks a lot. We do a lot of sticks. It's also doing the skills and being able to hit them in any situation."
How do you make sure the team stays focused when the season starts and a lot of distractions hit?
"Whenever you see somebody getting down you pick them up, say it's ok and we have a ways to go. We are there for each other to pick each other up."
What were the team's goals heading into 2010?
"Our goal was to come out (in the first meet) with a 196.00. We came really close to that, so we are excited about that. Also, (we want to) win Big 12's and make it to Nationals."
Which opponents are you most excited to compete against this year?
"I think Utah will be fun and Oklahoma."
What do you enjoy most about competing at the Devaney Center?
"The crowd and the energy that we get from performing in front of them."
What was the most exciting thing you did over winter break?
"It was a short break, but we were able to go home for about seven days. That was fun to take a little time off and relax."
What has been your favorite bonding activity with the team so far this year?
"We've done a lot of things as a team this year. We went camping back in October. It was actually the first time it snowed, it was a fun experience and gave us some really funny memories."
How is this semester look for you class-wise? What do you think might be one of your favorite classes?
"I have good classes, they are interesting. I'm looking forward to Into to Cognitive Learning."
What is your favorite movie?
"I have a lot of favorite movies, one that sticks out would be Rush Hour."
What is something you know now that you wish you knew as a freshman?
"Don't worry about what other people are thinking or think about you. Be yourself no matter what."
Who was your favorite gymnast growing up?
"Dominique Dawes."
What is your favorite Disney movie?
"The Princess and the Frog; it's so good!"
What would you like to do after school and gymnastics here at Nebraska?
"I'm not sure yet. I might go to grad school, maybe study something in psychology."
