After knocking off nationally-ranked Oklahoma last weekend, the Nebraska football team began preparations for its matchup against Kansas this weekend with a 90-minute practice on Monday afternoon. While the Husker offense took to the Hawks Championship Center, the NU defense practiced outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass grass fields northeast of Memorial Stadium.
With a physical Nebraska-Oklahoma battle two days ago, the Huskers practiced without pads today.
"It was a late game and late in the season and we had a couple of guys who were a little nicked up," Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini said. "We felt like it was the right thing to do today. The trade-off there, we say, is that if we lighten the physicality of it, we want fast tempo and we got that today. We had a good practice."
Despite practicing without pads today, the Huskers kept up their intensity and tempo, while working on the basics of a game plan against the Jayhawks.
"I thought it was a good day," Pelini said. "It was a good, fast tempo. We just got them back moving again and put in the very, very basics of the game plan. We will get back to work tonight and make sure we get in a good workday tomorrow."
Although Kansas is 1-4 in Big 12 games, Nebraska will face a tough Kansas team at Lawrence this weekend, as Jayhawk senior Todd Reesing is ranked second in Big 12 total offense statistics.
"They're a good football team," Pelini said. "They obviously have a very dangerous offense with very skilled people. They play hard and very aggressive on defense. They're well-coached. It's going to be a heck of a challenge going there to Lawrence. We have our work cut out for us."
The Huskers will continue preparations for Kansas on Tuesday afternoon.
