The Life Skills Department hosted the 2009 Student Athlete Career Fair on Monday, October 6th. In order to best prepare Husker student-athletes for life after sports, 25 companies and university organizations were invited to market their services targeting student-athletes for potential employment. Companies and organizations ranged from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Heart Hospital to the Gallup Organization and Union Pacific. Additional companies such as the FBI, Lincoln Fire Department and Cedars Youth Home were also in attendance. Former student-athletes, who previously gained employment through this event, helped recruit for the respective companies. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Career Services participated and promoted their upcoming career events and services.
The Career Fair provides a great educational opportunity for student-athletes to begin thinking about their professional careers outside their sports. Student athletes are encouraged to visit as many companies in order to begin networking and creating professional relationships. They have a chance to meet potential employers and market themselves in hopes to gain professional employment once they have completed their athletic career. The Student-Athlete Career Fair is yet another example of Nebraska's commitment to total person development and preparing student-athletes for success in life.
