Under the direction of fourth-year coach Doc Sadler, the Nebraska basketball team begins full team practices for the 2009-10 season on Friday, Oct. 16, at 5 p.m. and will follow up with its first public appearance the next day at the Husker Hoops at Husker Nation Pavilion event before the Nebraska-Texas Tech football game (2:30 p.m. kickoff). The 19-man Cornhusker squad will be on hand at the Pavilion on Saturday, Oct. 17, for an introduction to the public along with games with the fans and an autograph session.
“We’re excited about the upcoming season and are looking forward to tipping it off in just a few short weeks,” said Executive Associate A.D. Marc Boehm. “This unique setting will provide fans a great opportunity to come down to the Pavilion to see the new team Doc will have on the court this year. We hope we’ll have another large crowd to welcome them and get the season started on the right foot.”
The event will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Pavilion, where a Mondo sport court will be placed on the track at Ed Weir Stadium adjacent to Memorial Stadium. Fans are encouraged to get there early to listen to Sadler on the radio with the Husker Sports Network team at 12:50 p.m. Seating will be available in the grandstand area alongside the south end of the track and temporary seating on the infield will be available. Rebounder’s Club members are also encouraged to come pick up their free basketball T-shirt and they can sit in a reserved seating area.
Husker Sports Network basketball analyst Matt Davison will emcee the event. Players on the team will be given the chance to introduce themselves and seniors Ryan Anderson and Sek Henry will have a short Q/A session with Davison to talk about the upcoming season. Sadler will also take a few questions submitted by fans and talk about the outlook for the campaign that includes a difficult non-conference road schedule and play in possibly the nation’s premier league in 2009-10.
The Huskers will then have some interaction with the fans as 4-5 players will select a child to help them come up with shots for an Around-the-World contest. The team will conclude its on-court activities with a half-court shot contest before spending the final 20 minutes at the Pavilion signing autographs. Schedule cards for the 2009-10 season will be available along with autograph cards with a complete schedule.
