Huskers in the NFL - Week 5

Lincoln - A total of 14 former Huskers saw action during Week 5 of the 2009 NFL season, while five other players were off with a bye. Former Huskers were involved in both overtime games on Sunday, as Russ Hochstein helped the Denver Broncos stay undefeated with a win over New England, while three former Huskers met in a thriller in Kansas City.

Touted as the “The Game That Never Was”, the Chiefs, formerly the AFL’s Dallas Texans, looked to get their first win of the year against the Dallas Cowboys. With each team in their 1962 jerseys, the Chiefs’ Mike Brown and Demorrio Williams did all they could, but Steve Octavien’s Cowboys escaped KC with a win, 26-20, behind Miles Austin’s franchise record 250 yards receiving. Brown and Williams combined for 12 tackles, with Brown also recovering a Tony Romo fumble in the second quarter that resulted in a Matt Cassel touchdown pass to Mike Vrabel five plays later.

With a win over New England, 20-17, Hochstein and the Broncos are 5-0 for the first time since 1998. With former Husker Correll Buckhalter out with injury, rookie Knowshon Moreno received his first NFL start, rushing for 88 yards on 21 carries behind Hochstein and the rest of the Bronco offensive line. The O-line also protected Kyle Orton as he threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns.

In a defensive struggle in Buffalo, Chris Kelsay and the rest of the Bills defense held the Browns’ offense to just six points, but it was not enough as the Bills offense was only able to push across three points in the loss. Kelsay produced four tackles, while the defense overall had seven tackles for loss, one interception and eight pass deflections. Cleveland’s Derek Anderson struggled all day against the Bills’ defense, as he was 2-17 for just 23 yards.
