Lincoln - The Nebraska football team took to the Ed and Joyanne Gass grass practice fields and the Hawks Center for a two-hour workout on Monday afternoon. The Huskers continued preparation for their first Big 12 matchup against Missouri on Thursday night in Columbia, Mo.
With only two practices left until game day, NU focused on defending sophomore quarterback Blaine Gabbert and the Missouri offense. With Gabbert at the helm of the offense, the Tigers lead the Big 12 in passing efficiency.
Nebraska Defensive Coordinator Carl Pelini discussed why Gabbert will be challenging to defend.
"He's very decisive, has a strong arm, he's a good athlete," Pelini said. "He has all the tools. For a guy who doesn't have a lot of experience a lot of times you see mistakes, but he doesn't make mistakes. He's very well-coached. They always do a great job with their quarterbacks."
The Huskers hope to create pressure and problems for the Missouri offense.
"Gabbert doesn't get flushed a lot," Pelini said. "He sets deep. Their offensive line does a great job at protecting. He doesn't feel a whole lot of pressure back there. That's something that they've been able to do over the years. That's part of their scheme I think."
While the NU defense practiced outside, the Nebraska offense fought simulated crowd noise in the Hawks Championship Center.
The Huskers will hold one more practice in Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon before heading to Missouri on Wednesday.
The Nebraska-Missouri matchup is slated to begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Faurout Field/Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Mo. The game will be aired nationally on ESPN.
