Former Husker Chelsea Aubry helped Canada qualify for the 2010 World Championships by knocking off Cuba in overtime at the 2009 FIBA Americas Tournament in Cuiaba, Brazil on Sunday.
Aubry, who is one of three current Canadian National Team members who also played for Canada at the 2006 World Championships, connected on a three-pointer with four seconds left to give Canada a 48-45 lead. However, Cuba got a three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
The Canadians won the bronze medal by dominating the extra five-minute period, rolling to a 59-49 win for their first win over Cuba in women's basketball since 1995. The victory punched Canada's ticket to next year's World Championships which will be held in the Czech Republic.
Aubry, a native of Kitchener, Ontario, opened the tournament with a 14-point effort in Canada's lopsided win over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday. She added 12 points in a 70-57 victory over Puerto Rico on Thursday.
Canada's lone loss in the tournament came on Friday night with a 61-45 setback to eventual tournament champion Brazil.
Aubry was a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner at Nebraska from 2003-04 through 2006-07. She scored 898 points and pulled down 539 rebounds in 123 career games, including 90 starts. She was a member of Coach Connie Yori's first Nebraska recruiting class and helped the Huskers to four consecutive postseason tournament appearances, including a trip to the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
