Last Saturday was one of the worst days I’ve experienced as a fan, broadcaster, or even when I was (I know for some it’s hard to believe) an athlete. I just couldn’t shake that horrible feeling. I felt as if the football gods had an anti-Nebraska agenda.
As Carl Pelini said, “It’s a crime, just a crime” that Nebraska didn’t win that football game. I woke up on Sunday and didn’t feel any better. Monday I actually was in a worse mood. My wife thought I had issues when I was still grumpy on Tuesday morning. It wasn’t until I heard Bo Pelini’s press conference on Tuesday that I actually started to feel like moving on from that dreadful day in Blacksburg.
The coach exuded confidence and vowed that his team will play with passion Saturday night against Louisiana. It wasn’t a “Tim Tebow” speech that will be inscribed on the walls of Memorial Stadium, but it was leadership 101. I realized on Tuesday how lucky Nebraska is to have Bo Pelini as their coach. He is such a great motivator and a very good leader. There is no doubt that this team is ready for today’s symbolic game against Louisiana.
Husker fans do me a favor, and pat yourself on the back today. While you are at it, pat your grandparents on the back too. This 300th sellout is perhaps one of the greatest accomplishments in college football history.
Why? Because 5-7 seasons didn’t keep you away. Because a recession didn’t keep you away. Because moving to another state didn’t keep you away. Because Nebraska is the shining example of what a fan base should be. It is our tradition. It is our lifestyle. It is our culture.
Congratulations on 300 consecutive sellouts ? another feather in the cap (or fedora) for the greatest fan base in all of sports.
