Weatherholt Falls Short in Finals

Midland, Texas - Sophomore Mary Weatherholt of the Nebraska women's tennis team came up short in her bid to repeat as champion at the Midland Invitational on Sunday afternoon when she lost to Baylor's Jelena Stanivuk 7-5, 6-3, in the finals. Weatherholt still had an impressive singles record of 5-1 at the tournament.

Weatherholt was one of four players left when the day began on Sunday, and she defeated Texas A&M's Nazari Urbina 7-5, 7-6 (6) in the semifinals to advance to the finals showdown with Stanivuk.

"It was a great day for Mary and the Huskers," Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. "She defeated a great opponent in Urbina in the semifinal. She found herself in some more difficult situations and found a way to come from behind."

Although Weatherholt fell short in the final match, Perez was still impressed with the way she competed against one of the Big 12's toughest players.

"We have to give credit to the Baylor player," Perez said. "She played a great match and came up with some great shots when she needed to. Mary played well and it was another great run for her in a very talented field."

The Huskers are in action again next week as they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Minnesota Invitational.
