On Arkansas State’s defense
“They’re a very, very good defense. They’re going to have nine of 11 guys returning. One of their returners got hurt last week. They’re a solid defense and they’ve gone in some pretty impressive places and played well really. It’ll definitely be a challenge.”
On being aware of defensive end Alex Carrington and his 10.5 sacks last season
“I’m sure our O-Line will do a good job against them. The D-Line is a strength that they have though, and you know that we’re aware of that. But I’m confident in our guys up front.”
On how disappointed he was with the offense’s tempo in the first half
“It could have been a little better, but that’s kind of a first game thing, the management thing. The second half was much better, so you know that’s definitely something we’ll focus on and improve. I don’t think it will be an issue.”
On getting into the flow of the game
“You want to come out ready to go. You want to come out already in the flow. The first series, we had a couple things here and there that didn’t necessarily go great. I felt like after that we got into a pretty good rhythm as an offense.”
On if he was happy at the number of times he scrambled
“I think my thing is just create time for receivers to get open. I’d rather have them running with the ball. They’re the guys who are the big playmakers out there. I’ll run if I have to, but I’d rather have someone get open down field and then hit them for a big gain.”
On if staying in the pocket was emphasized in the spring
“Yeah, just realizing that when you break contain or break out of the pocket, you don’t have to just take off right away and look for yards yourself, just kind of work on extending the play so the guys who practice making plays, catching the ball and getting away from people, can do that.”
