Anyone who wonders how fine the line is between obscurity and playing time for Nebraska football should listen to John Papuchis.
The featured speaker at last Thursday's inaugural Nebraska Walk-On Club Luncheon of the 2009 season, Papuchis - the Huskers' defensive ends coach who also coordinates the special teams - described how Mathew May climbed his way from the obscurity of a little known walk-on to contend for a starting positon at linebacker.
Click the video above and let Papuchis take you on the incredible journey May traveled.
While you're watching, make plans to attend the second Walk-On Club Luncheon of the season on Thursday, Oct. 1, when former Husker Academic All-American Jeff Jamrog, a former walk-on and now the assistant athletic director for football operations, will be the featured speaker.
Seats at the luncheon cost $20 each. A table of eight can be reserved for $160 for the Oct. 1 luncheon and for a third 2009 luncheon on Dec. 10.
To make reservations, contact Kiley Abdouch in the Nebraska Athletic Department. She can be reached via email (kabdouch@huskers.com).
The luncheons are a great opportunity to help support the Nebraska football team, hear about the walk-on experience from former walk-ons themselves, and get the latest updates on the season from members of the Husker football staff.
The luncheons begin at 11:30 a.m. at Lincoln Station.
