The Nebraska soccer team opens 2009 competition with an exhibition game Tuesday afternoon at Colorado College. The Huskers and Tigers will kick off from Stewart Field at 1 p.m. CST.
Tuesday's battle marks the only exhibition game for Nebraska, as the Huskers will travel north to Greeley to take on Northern Colorado in the 2009 season opener on Friday.
Nebraska returns seven starters off last season's team that went 10-9-1 overall and finished fifth in the Big 12 Conference (6-4). The Huskers lost five players to graduation, but have six seniors on this year's squad, including defensive standouts Carly Peetz and Anna Caniglia. Peetz is one of two all-conference performers for the Huskers (2008 All-Big 12 Second Team), joining sophomore forward Molly Thomas (2008 All-Big 12 Newcomer).
Nebraska was very strong in the 2009 spring season, compiling an 8-1-3 record. The Huskers' lone loss came at Florida, while NU notched notable wins over Arizona State, Washington State and Minnesota.
The Huskers will be on the road for the first three weeks of the 2009 season, as they also play two games at the Villanova Classic (Aug. 28-30) before returning to Lincoln for the home opener Sept. 4 vs. Lamar. The annual Meet-N-Beat the Huskers is next Wednesday, Aug. 26 at the Nebraska Soccer Field at 6:30 p.m.
Scouting the Colorado College Tigers
Colorado College is in its 25th year as a Division I women's college soccer program. The Tigers went 13-7-2 overall in 2008 and made it to the second round of the Conference-USA Tournament. Head Coach Geoff Bennett's squad returns eight starters and 16 letterwinners from that team, including three all-conference selections.
Husker History versus the Tigers
Nebraska and Colorado College are in the record books three times, with the Huskers holding a 2-1 edge. The two teams last met in 2005, when the Tigers defeated the Huskers 1-0 in Lincoln. Nebraska won the previous two matches in 1994 (2-1 in Colorado Springs) and 1996 (5-2 in Lincoln).
