Mike Ekeler doesn't know who Nebraska's starting linebackers will be this fall, but the Husker assistant coach knows this . . . Mathew May is a player who flew under the radar of every major recruiting service he can think of.
"However many stars they gave Matt, it wasn't enough," Ekeler said, describing May as tough, smart, determined, and as fast as you would expect a 10.8 100-meter sprinter to be.
Recruiting services, Ekeler said, often guess on the athleticism of players from smaller schools like Chase County High School in Imperial, Nebraska, and that's fine with him. "We like players who walk on, ready to show everyone what they can do," Ekeler said.
As a redshirt freshman last year, May appeared in eight games, including the last seven contests when Nebraska went 6-1.
A solid performance in the spring, combined with consistency and improvement this fall, will enable May to compete for the starting Will linebacker position.
In 2008, he played safety in his first five games before moving to linebacker for his last three.
For today's Quick Hits on Huskers.com, May covers a wide range of personal preferences and even offers up a short description of his linebacker coach right after he describes his head coach. They're basically the same description, but you have to watch the video to see why.
