Port of Spain, Trinidad ? Jessica Furlan became the second Husker to win a medal at the Pan Am Junior Games, as she placed third with a time of 10:56.22 in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase on Sunday night at Hasely Crawford National Stadium.
A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, Furlan was beat out by Cuba’s Yoslin Ocampo (10:32.28) and Argentina’s Borell Florencia (10:40.46), but was able to outlast Americans Natalie Busby (11:02.30) and Alyssa Allison (11:20.98), as well as Medina Rosneidy of the Dominican Republic (11:56.38). Over the three-day meet, Furlan and her Canadian teammates came away tied with Jamaica for the third-most total medals at 13.
A member of Team USA, Natalie Willer won the Huskers’ other medal on Friday, as the Elkhorn, Neb. native won the women’s pole vault with a meet-record vault of 14-1 1/4. Willer won one of the Americans’ 21 gold medals at the meet, leading Team USA to a meet-high 57 medals. Overall, 17 countries won medals, with Brazil finishing a distance second to Team USA with 16 medals.
