302 Huskers Earn Big 12 Honor Roll Spots

Lincoln - An impressive list of 302 Nebraska student-athletes across all sports claimed spots on the Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll, the University of Nebraska announced on Monday, June 15. Among the 302 student-athletes who achieved 3.0 or better grade-point averages during the semester, 52 Huskers posted perfect 4.0 GPAs.

Nebraska's representation on the spring honor roll marked a nearly 12 percent increase over last spring, when 270 Huskers earned honor roll spots. Along with the 32 additional members of the spring honor roll, 16 more Huskers posted perfect 4.0 grade-point averages this spring compared to the 36 4.0 GPAs notched by NU student-athletes in the spring of 2008.

Nebraska's approach to recruiting the nation's finest student-athletes yielded a remarkably diverse contingent of spring academic honorees that included representatives of 30 U.S. states and 29 student-athletes from 12 foreign countries, including honor roll members from four Canadian provinces. Husker honor roll members also came to Nebraska from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, England, Finland, France, Germany, Jamaica, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The Huskers' Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll class also carried a distinct state flavor with 122 native Nebraskans among the 302 award winners.

Coach Bo Pelini's Huskers enjoyed a solid semester in the classroom, as 49 members of the football team posted 3.0 or better grade-point averages, including seven student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester. Seven more football players earned honor roll spots than last spring, including four additional Huskers with 4.0 GPAs.

Nebraska's men's and women's track and field and cross country programs, under the direction of Coach Gary Pepin and Jay Dirksen, also produced remarkable success in the classroom with a total of 86 honorees across their sports - nine more than a year ago. The men's track and field and cross country squads showed off 46 members of the honor roll, while the women's teams added 40 honorees. The squads were also loaded with 19 student-athletes who finished with 4.0 GPA semesters.

Coach Pablo Morales' NU swimming and diving team added another strong semester in the classroom with 20 honor roll selections, including a quartet of 4.0 semesters.

Coach John Walker's NU soccer program also produced an impressive list of Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selections, with 20 Huskers earning recognition. Soccer's contingent included a pair of perfect semesters.

Coach Mike Anderson's baseball team enjoyed a strong semester in the classroom by placing 19 Huskers on the honor roll, an increase of three student-athletes over a year ago.

The Nebraska men's gymnastics program - in legendary Coach Francis Allen's final season at the helm - added 13 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll members, while Coach Mark Manning's wrestling program and Coach Rhonda Revelle's softball team each produced a dozen honorees. All three sports showed increases from a year ago.

Coach Dan Kendig's women's gymnastics team produced 10 honor roll selections, while Coach John Cook's volleyball team added nine student-athletes to the list. Coach Connie Yori's women's basketball team contributed eight members to the honor roll, including a trio of perfect 4.0 GPAs, while Coach Scott Jacobson's women's tennis program matched both of those numbers. Gymnastics, women's basketball and women's tennis all showed increased numbers on the honor roll from a year ago.

Coach Bill Spangler's men's golf and Coach Kerry McDermott's men's tennis teams each contributed seven honor roll selections, while Coach Doc Sadler's men's basketball team and Coach Robin Krapfl's women's golf teams managed six selections. Coach Bill Straub's national champion Nebraska women's bowling team and Coach Morgan Hicks' rifle team each pitched in five Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll members.
