Tezak Drafted in 24th Round

Lincoln ? Nebraska senior infielder Jeff Tezak became the second Husker player taken Wednesday in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, as he was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 24th round.

Tezak, a 5-10, 176-pound switch hitter, was taken as the No. 733 overall selection, and it marks the first time that Tezak has been selected in the MLB Draft.  Tezak was a .318 hitter in 113 career games as a Husker, driving in 67 runs and hitting six homers.  Both of Nebraska’s first two draftees were not selected prior to attending Nebraska.

A two-year starter, Tezak recovered from knee surgery to put together a solid senior year. He hit .315 with two homers and 28 RBIs, leading the Huskers in walks (30) and on-base percentage (.425), while ranking second in stolen bases (six), third in batting average and fourth in both RBIs and runs scored (34). Tezak struck out just 16 times in 178 at-bats in 2009 and belted both of his homers and drove in four runs in a loss to Oklahoma. Defensively, Tezak was one of the Huskers’ best performers, as the San Diego, Calif., native fielded at a .978 clip at second base and led the Huskers with 107 assists.

In 2007, Tezak earned second-team All-Big 12 honors at designated hitter, posting a .335 average with three homers and 37 RBIs in 56 contests. He recorded a career-high five hits in a win over Alabama and drove in a career-high six runs in a win over Missouri. Tezak missed nearly all of the 2008 season following season-ending knee surgery in March.
