Nesseth Drafted in the 15th Round

Lincoln ? Right-hander Mike Nesseth became the first Husker selected in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft, as he was taken in the 15th round by the Los Angeles Angles (No. 471 overall) Wednesday afternoon.

This is the first time the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder has been drafted, as he was not selected coming out of Windom Area (Minn.) High School three years ago.  Nesseth has compiled a 9-5 record over the last two years, striking out 126 hitters over 102.1 career innings.

This season, Nesseth compiled a 5-4 record with two saves in 20 appearances. He led the Huskers in strikeouts (73) over 64.2 innings, while holding opponents to a .250 batting average. He went at least six innings in six of his eight starts, including a complete-game performance against Cal State Northridge and a 12-strikeout effort against Sam Houston State. He had five performances with at least seven strikeouts as a sophomore, including eight strikeouts against NCAA Regional qualifier Baylor.

After redshirting in 2007, Nesseth worked out of the bullpen in 2008, helping the Huskers to 41 wins and a national seed. He compiled a 4-1 record with four saves and a 3.58 ERA in 27 appearances, fanning 53 and walking 14 over 37.2 innings.

Nesseth is currently playing baseball in the Cape Cod League this summer.
