Three Huskers Named to Hampshire Honor Society

Lincoln ?The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced Thursday that former Huskers Todd Peterson, Dan Titchener and Tyler Wortman will be inducted with the 2009 class into the NFF Hampshire Honor Society. The honor is bestowed upon college football players from all divisions who maintained a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average or better. A total of 564 players from 266 schools qualified for membership in the society’s third year.

NU’s three honorees completed their eligibility last fall after standout careers for the Huskers. Peterson, a native of Grand Island, finished among the top five players in NU history in receptions and receiving yardage for wide receivers. Titchener was a three-year starter, placing 55 career punts inside the opposition’s 20-yard line, and Wortman, from his linebacker position, solidified a defensive unit that ranked second in the Big 12 in total defense last season.

The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF’s current National Scholar-Athlete program, greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year and further strengthening the organization’s leadership role in encouraging academic performance by student-athletes. Qualification for membership includes:

-       Being a starter or a significant substitute in one’s last year of eligibility at an accredited NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division II, or an NAIA college or university;

-       Achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and

-       Meeting all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.

The NFF will also announce its 2009 College Football Hall of Fame Class on April 30. Former Huskers Trev Alberts (1990-93), Will Shields (1989-92) and Grant Wistrom (1994-97) are on the ballot.
