Huskers Fall to Wildcats

Manhattan, Kan. - The Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to Kansas State 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in Manhattan, Kan. The Huskers were denied a chance for their third straight Big 12 victory and fell to 12-6 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12.

Nebraska came out flat, losing all three doubles matches, and couldn’t rebound in singles play. The Huskers were missing the play of freshman Madeleine Geibert, who had been a consistent player in the No. 1 singles spot for the team all season. Geibert injured her leg in NU’s last match which forced her to sit out against the Wildcats.

All of the Husker players had to move up a spot in the singles lineup due to Geibert’s absence, including freshman Mary Weatherholt, who played her first match of the season at the No. 1 spot. Weatherholt defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-3, adding on to her NU single-season wins record, giving her 32 singles wins on the season. Jennifer Holmberg earned her third straight Big 12 win with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Nebraska still has three Big 12 matches on its schedule for the rest of the season, all on the road, including next weekend when the Huskers take on Missouri (Friday, April 17) and Colorado (Sunday, April 19). NU closes its regular season on Wednesday, April 22, against Texas Tech, a match that was rescheduled after being postponed on March 23. The match will take place in Norman, Okla., site of the Big 12 Championships which start on April 23.
