Huskers Head to KansasState
After wrapping up its home schedule last weekend, the Nebraska women’s tennis team hits the road for the first of four straight road matches to end the regular season, traveling to Manhattan, Kan., to take on KansasState. The Huskers earned two Big 12 wins last weekend, and they look to make it three straight this weekend to improve on their 4-3 conference record.
The Huskers went 2-1 in three matches last week. NU had a mid-week match with No. 42 Tulsa, where they fell 5-2. The Huskers then returned home for the weekend for their final two home matches. The first of the two, against OklahomaState, proved to be a thriller, as Nebraska came back from a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3 and even its Big 12 record at 3-3. NU carried its momentum from the comeback win to its match against Oklahoma two days later, winning 6-1 in a dominating performance and improving to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in the Big 12.
Nebraska has two matches next weekend, at Missouri and at Colorado, before finishing its Big 12 schedule against Texas Tech on April 22. The match against the Red Raiders will be played in Norman, Okla., site of the Big 12 Championships, after the original match was postponed due to weather back on March 23.
Scouting the Wildcats
After starting the season hot, winning three of their first five matches, the Kansas State Wildcats have struggled since and are in the midst of a nine-match losing streak. KSU has still been competitive, losing three of those matches by 4-3 margins, but have been unable to put together a complete performance recently. The Wildcats are relatively inexperienced, with only one senior, Katerina Kudlackova, among their seven-person roster. Sophomore Antea Huljev leads the team with 13 singles victories on the year, including five this spring.
Weatherholt Sets Single-Season Record
Nebraska freshman Mary Weatherholt set an NU single-season record with her 31st singles win of the season last weekend against Oklahoma. The Prairie Village, Kan., native bettered Sandra Noetzel’s record of 30 wins set in the 1998-99 season. After going 16-2 this fall, Weatherholt hasn’t slowed down in the spring, going 15-2 for an impressive 31-4 overall record.
Junior Wiveca Swarting is also climbing the single-season wins chart, as she earned her 28th win of the season last weekend. Her total is now tied for third on the all-time list with Sandra Noetzel’s 1996-97 campaign and Imke Reimers’ 2006-07 season.
