Lincoln ? The Nebraska women’s soccer team got two-goal performances from junior Shay Powell and sophomore Colleen Goetzmann to post impressive ties against USC (3-3) and Ajax (2-2) in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sunday. The Huskers moved to 5-1-3 in spring competition.
NU nearly pulled an upset against USC in the first contest of the day. The Huskers held a 3-2 advantage late in the game against the 2007 NCAA champions, but the Trojans scored with less than a minute left to force the tie. Sophomore Michaella Fulmer notched NU’s first goal on an Anna Caniglia cross, while Goetzmann scored her two goals on assists by Lauren Isenhower and Powell.
Later in the day, the Huskers earned a 2-2 versus Ajax, an amateur club that is part of the Women’s Premier Soccer League. Powell claimed both of NU’s goals, as Fulmer assisted on the first and Goetzmann on the second. Nebraska had several chances to win the game with Powell and Alexa Cardona both hitting the post in the contest, but neither team could find the winning goal.
Nebraska continues its spring season with a trip to Minneapolis, Minn., on April 18. The Huskers face Minnesota at 9 a.m., before squaring off with North Dakota State at 12:30 p.m
