The Nebraska football team took the field for the second time this spring with a 2 1/2 hour workout inside the Hawks Championship Center on Friday afternoon, in preparation for the annual Red-White Spring Game set for April 18 at 1 p.m. Second-year defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said that he is impressed with the progress players are making compared to last year.
“It was a good day today,” Pelini said. “The effort level was so much better. I think they’re starting to understand what we’re after in terms of effort. We’re just further ahead than we were a year ago and getting a little more complicated more quickly and guys are really responding to that. I’m excited about that.”
Another thing Pelini is excited about this spring is the competition taking place between the young group of linebackers. Redshirt freshmen Sean Fisher, Alonzo Whaley, Will Compton and sophomore Matt Holt are among those vying for playing time this spring.
“They see the opportunity to play,” Pelini said. “There is a lot of competition going on at those positions, a lot of fire and excitement. They are still making some bonehead, rookie mistakes, but it just brings a level of intensity to the game. The renewed competition we have at all those positions and the excitement of the young guys, it’s just bringing a certain intensity to practice that wasn’t always there a year ago.”
The Huskers return to the practice field on Saturday morning when they will practice in pads for the first time. Check back to Huskers.com for more information on the Husker football team and the Red-White spring game on April 18.
