Huskers Set for First Road Match of Season
After going 7-0 in its seven-match homestand to start the season, the Nebraska women’s tennis team hits the road for the first time this season as it travels to WichitaState to play the Shockers. WSU is also the first ranked opponent Nebraska will face this season, as the Shockers came in at No. 66 in the latest ITA polls. The Huskers will also play their final non-conference home match of the season on Saturday, when it hosts Northern Iowa at 2 p.m.
After a week off, the Huskers came back strong last weekend, beating West Virginia and IowaState in convincing fashion. The Huskers are currently at the top of the Big 12 standings with a 1-0 record. Nebraska only has one match on the schedule for next week, as it hosts Kansas on Friday, March 13.
Scouting the Shockers
The Wichita State Shockers are currently 8-1 on the season, with three of those wins coming against Big 12 opponents Oklahoma, KansasState and OklahomaState. Their only loss so far has come at the hands of No. 44 BYU, but the Shockers have rattled off five straight wins since that loss. Junior Florentina Hanisch leads the team with six singles wins this spring, while seniors Torrie Browning and Anna Egorova have combined to go 9-2.
Scouting the Panthers
After losing its first match of the season, Northern Iowa has won eight straight to bring their record to an impressive 8-1. Senior Taynara Moraes is tied for the team lead with eight singles wins this spring, while sophomore Laia Gonzalez-Garrid has an impressive 6-2 mark at No. 1 singles in the spring.
Huskers Crack National Top-75
The Huskers cracked the national top 75 for the first time this year when the new ITA poll that came out on March 3 had them ranked 75th. The pollsters couldn’t ignore Nebraska’s perfect 7-0 start, and the Huskers will have a chance to gain even more spots in the poll when it plays at No. 66 Wichita State this week.
