Lincoln ? The Nebraska women’s tennis team won its seventh straight match to start the season and its first conference match as it defeated Iowa State 5-2 on Sunday at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers had their toughest match of the year against the Cyclones, but played well enough to secure the win.
After winning its first 18 to start the season, Nebraska lost its first doubles match when ISU’s No. 2 doubles team took down Wiveca Swarting and Jennifer Holmberg, 8-7 (4). The Huskers won the other two matches, however, giving them the doubles point.
The Huskers wasted little time in clinching the match, as Mary Weatherholt, Wiveca Swarting, Jana Albers and Abby Buxton all won their singles matches in straight sets, giving Nebraska a 5-0 lead. Two Huskers suffered their first singles losses of the season, as Madeleine Geibert fell in a third match supertiebreaker at No. 1 singles and Ashley Finnegan dropped her match at No. 5 singles. Still, the Huskers proved too tough for the Cyclones and improved their record against them to 34-3 all-time.
Nebraska will hit the road for the first time on Wednesday, March 4, as it plays at No. 71 Wichita State. NU finished up its homestand a perfect 7-0, and will look to remain perfect at home as it hosts Northern Iowa on Saturday, March 7.
