Huskers Open Conference Play Against IowaState

The Nebraska women’s tennis team opens up Big 12 Conference play this weekend with a home match against IowaState on Sunday, March 1. The Huskers will also play West Virginia on Friday, Feb. 27, in the first-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and the Huskers.

Nebraska is wrapping up a seven-match homestand this weekend, and it hopes to make it a perfect 7-0 in that stretch. Last weekend, both of Nebraska’s scheduled matches, vs. Nebraska-Kearney and South Alabama, were canceled, leaving the Huskers with no matches on the slate. NU is eager to get back into action this weekend and hopes to continue the hot start to its season.

The Huskers hit the road for the first time next week at WichitaState for a Wednesday afternoon matchup. The Huskers return home the following Saturday for its final non-conference home match of the season against Northern Iowa.

Scouting the Mountaineers

West Virginia has had a busy start to the season, as it has already played in 10 matches, going 5-5. The Mountaineers come into Lincoln riding a four-match winning streak. WVU has no seniors on its nine-person squad, but three juniors, Gabriela Blaskovicova, Olga Elkin and Stephanie LaFortune, lead the young Mountaineer squad.

Scouting the Cyclones

Senior Kara Hickey leads IowaState into Lincoln with a 4-2 record, including two straight wins last weekend against Syracuse and Massachusetts. The Huskers have a 33-3 all-time record against the Cylones, including a 6-1 win last year in Ames.

Finnegan Ranked in Top 125

Senior Ashley Finnegan is the latest Husker to be ranked in the national top 125, coming in at No. 118 in the latest ITA polls. Finnegan is a perfect 7-0 so far this season, including four wins in the fall and three this spring. She has won nine straight singles matches dating back to last year.

Net Notes

??? The Huskers have won 92 of their last 95 home non-conference matches, dating back to the 1998 season.

??? The Huskers have won 22 straight non-conference matches.

??? Two Huskers have a chance to crack the all-time top five single season wins list at NU. Wiveca Swarting already has 19 singles wins, while Mary Weatherholt has 21. The fifth-most singles wins in a season at NU is currently 26, set by Gitte Ostermann in 2004-05. Sandra Noetzel is first on the list, claiming 30 wins in the 1998-99 season. With 18 matches left plus postseason play, both Swarting and Weatherholt have a chance to break the all-time record.
