Huskers Take on In-State Foe UNK

The Nebraska women’s tennis team will face its second in-state opponent of the season this weekend as it will square off with Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, Feb. 20, at 4 p.m. The matchup will be the first ever between the Huskers and the Lopers.

 

NU cruised to two victories last weekend against Eastern Michigan and ColoradoState, extending their winning streak over non-conference opponents to 22. The Huskers have only dropped one point through five matches so far this season.

 

The Huskers have two more matches left on their nine-match homestand after this weekend. It will wrap it up next weekend with a match against West Virginia before opening up Big 12 Conference play with a match against IowaState. Nebraska will then hit the road for the first time this season at WichitaState on March 4.

 

Scouting the Lopers

The Nebraska-Kearney Lopers have yet to play a match this season, as Friday’s matchup  with the Huskers will be their first of the season. UNK is led by senior Callie Erickson, who helped lead the Lopers to a 13-11 overall record last season.

??? The Huskers have won 92 of their last 95 home non-conference matches, dating back to the 1998 season.

??? The Huskers have won 22 straight non-conference matches.

??? Nebraska’s streak of 12 straight home non-conference sweeps came to an end on Feb. 8 with a 6-1 win over Drake.

??? Two Huskers have a chance to crack the all-time top five single season wins list at NU. Wiveca Swarting already has 19 singles wins, while Mary Weatherholt has 21. The fifth-most singles wins in a season at NU is currently 26, set by Gitte Ostermann in 2004-05. Sandra Noetzel is first on the list, claiming 30 wins in the 1998-99 season. With 18 matches left plus postseason play, both Swarting and Weatherholt have a chance to break the all-time record.
