Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team won its fifth straight match to begin the season on Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 sweep of ColoradoState. The win marks the ninth straight year the Huskers have defeated the Rams, and the 12th win in as many tries overall against CSU. The Rams fell to 2-3 with the loss.
The Huskers started off by sweeping all three doubles matches, the fifth straight time they’ve done that this season. Madeline Geibert and Jana Albers (No. 1) and Jennifer Holmberg and Wivcea Swarting (No. 2) each earned 8-3 wins to give NU a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Weatherholt opened the scoring for Nebraska in singles, winning 6-1, 6-4 over Tori Arneson at No. 3 singles. Swarting finished her 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 just minutes later to give Nebraska a 3-0 lead. Albers clinched it for Nebraska shortly after with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Fluegge at No. 4 singles.
Stephanie Evans then earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Satherlie at No. 5 singles and Ashley Finnegan won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 singles over Kirsten Stople. Geibert clinched the sweep for the Huskers at No. 1 singles, although she had to go to a third-set tiebreaker to do it, winning 6-4, 4-6, (10-6).
Nebraska has now won 22 consecutive non-conference matches, and 92 of its last 95 home non-conference matches. The Huskers have four more matches in its homestand to open the season, including a pair of matches next weekend against Nebraska-Kearney (Friday, Feb. 20, 4 p.m.) and South Alabama (Sunday, Feb. 22, 11:30 a.m.).
