Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team defeated Drake 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers moved to 3-0 with the win, while Drake fell to 1-5.
The Huskers easily collected the doubles point as they won by scores of 8-0, 8-1 and 8-2. Wiveca Swarting gave NU a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Gabriela Demos at the No. 2 singles spot. Mary Weatherholt and Jana Albers gave Nebraska its third and fourth point with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
After struggling in the first set, freshman Madeleine Geibert turned it on in the second set to defeat Drake’s Veronika Leszayova at the No. 1 singles position, 7-6 (1), 6-1. Abby Buxton got past her opponent at No. 6 singles by way of a third-set tiebreaker, beating Amanda Aragon 6-3, 6-7 (5), (11-9) in a match that was close the whole way through.
Drake’s Kari Sloboth gave the Bulldogs their only point on the night, defeating Stephanie Evans 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 5 singles spot.
Nebraska continues its eight-match homestand to start the season next week, as it takes on Eastern Michigan on Friday, Feb. 13, and Colorado State on Sunday, Feb. 15.
