Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team notched its 12th straight non-conference home sweep on Friday afternoon with a 7-0 win over Wyoming. The Huskers moved to 2-0 with the win, while the Cowgirls fell to 0-1.
Wyoming, who only had five players able to participate in the meet, had to give up wins at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spot, putting them in a hole before the match even started. Nebraska won both doubles matches to secure the doubles point heading into singles play.
Senior Ashley Finnegan got Nebraska started in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Wyoming’s Carolina Chaix at No. 5 singles, giving NU a 3-0 lead. Stephanie Evans sealed the victory for NU with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jamie Nelson at the No. 4 spot.
The Cowgirls didn’t go down without a fight, however, and proved to be some stiff competition for the Huskers at the top of the singles lineup.
Mary Weatherholt won a tough-fought match at the No. 2 singles spot, 6-4, 6-2, over Wyoming’s Rebecca Berger.
Jana Albers beat Carly Van Hollen 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot to make the score 6-0 Nebraska. Wiveca Swarting closed the match with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Sarah Summerfield at the No. 1 spot, which included a comeback in the first set after being down 5-3.
Nebraska hits the courts again on Sunday with a match against Drake at 11 a.m. at the NebraskaTennisCenter.
