Panzau Makes Impression at Student-Athlete Assembly

Former junior college volleyball standout Sarah Panzau was the featured speaker at the All-Student-Athlete Assembly on Jan. 22, 2009.

Panzau was in a near fatal alcohol-related car crash in 2003 as a result of drinking and driving. Illinois troopers notified Panzau’s mother that she was involved a fatal crash and was at St. Louis University Hospital.

Miraculously, Panzau survived the horrific crash. After approximately 30 surgeries and losing her left arm, she now travels the country talking about choices, decisions and consequences.

"I became rebellious and eventually drugs and alcohol started to mean more to me than school and volleyball," Panzau said. "As an athlete, I had a degree of invincibility and thought that something this life-changing could never happen to me."

Panzau challenged the Huskers to support one another and be true friends who always look out for the safety and best interests of their teammates. She also instructed the student-athletes to call a coach for help, as typically a coach is a crucial factor in their decision to commit to college.

Panzau told each student-athlete to contact their parents immediately to tell them they loved and appreciated them.

"Your parents and family will stick by you and be there for you no matter what the situation," Panzau said.

Panzau remains passionate about volleyball and follows the sport closely. She has competed on the U.S. National Paralympic team and was honored to be in the presence of the Nebraska volleyball team.

Husker CoSIDA Academic All-American Kori Cooper concluded the assembly by presenting Panzau with an award and autographed team volleyball.
