Montgomery Captures Big 12 Honor

Lincoln - Nebraska's Cory Montgomery earned the first Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honor of her career when she was named the winner of the league's weekly award on Dec. 1.

Montgomery, a 6-2 junior forward from Cannon Falls, Minn., produced the best week of her Husker career by averaging 19.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.0 block and 1.0 steal per game in three contests last week. She hit 21-of-47 of her shots from the field, including 1-of-4 three-pointers, while knocking down 16-of-22 free throws.

In the opening round of the Holiday Inn & Suites Express Midtown Thanksgiving Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday, Montgomery erupted for her second career double-double with a career-high 22 points and matched her career-best with 11 rebounds in a 67-54 win over Butler. She added a blocked shot and a steal against the Bulldogs, who returned five starters from a team that won 20 games a year ago.

In the championship game against the hosts from New Mexico, Montgomery added team highs with 17 points and eight rebounds, while adding an assist, a block and a steal. The Huskers fell to the Lobos, 62-51, but Montgomery earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Montgomery opened the week with 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Huskers to a 76-55 victory at Denver. Against the Pioneers, Montgomery was a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line to help Nebraska set a school record by going a perfect 18-for-18 at the line.

Through six games in her first season as a starter in Nebraska’s lineup, Montgomery ranks fourth in the Big 12 in scoring with 17.3 points per game, while tying with Texas A&M’s Danielle Gant for seventh in the conference in rebounding at 8.2 boards per game. She also ranks 15th in the Big 12 in field goal percentage (45.0 percent) and eighth in the league in free throw percentage (78.9 percent).

Oklahoma's Whitney Hand and Texas A&M's Sydney Carter shared the Big 12 Rookie-of-the-Week award.

Montgomery and the Huskers open a four-game home stand at the Bob Devaney Sports on Tuesday night when they take on Oral Roberts. Nebraska will tip-off with the Golden Eagles, who earned a trip to the 2008 NCAA Tournament, at 7:05 p.m.
