Nebraska Tops Conference in Academic Honors

Lincoln ? A conference-leading 15 Husker soccer players were named to the 2008 academic All-Big 12 team, the league office announced this morning. Nebraska placed 14 student-athletes on the first team and one on the second team for its most-ever academic All-Big 12 honors in a single season.

Leading the Husker contingent was senior midfielder Sari Raber, who captured first-team accolades for the third consecutive season. Raber, a native of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, was also recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII first team and is in contention for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Fellow seniors Lindsay Poehling and Selenia Iacchelli also earned first-team accolades for the third time in their careers.

Juniors Anna Caniglia, Brittney Lanier, Carly Peetz and Shay Powell notched their second academic first-team honors, while eight Huskers claimed the award for the first time in their career. Senior Aysha Jamani earned first-team academic accolades in the classroom, after being named to the All-Big 12 first team on the field yesterday.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the soccer academic all-league squad consisted of 79 first-team members combined with 15 on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade-point average, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
