Lincoln? The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team held an intrasquad meet Thursday at Mable Lee Hall. The Huskers worked through beam, floor exercise, vault and uneven bars in continuing preparation for the 2009 season. Coach Dan Kendig saw the intrasquad as a great opportunity for his team to grow.
“It was a real eye-opening experience for everybody,” Kendig said. “Our efforts are good, but we have a lot of work left to do. Most of the work we have left is hard to measure, but it is very valuable. A lot of the mistakes are just little things that need to be fixed.”
Senior All-American Tricia Woo felt like the team learned a lot from its first competition experience of the year.
“We had a lot of nerves, a lot of the mistakes we made were because we were trying too hard and not holding back,” Woo said. “We had a good effort; it was good to see what we need to work on.”
Kendig acknowledged that an event like an intrasquad helps a team realize the direction they are headed and the work that needs to be done in the future. With a strong offseason of training, the Huskers are looking to put all of the pieces together to become a more complete team.
“It’s looking at it as a whole and looking at where we can make the biggest adjustments to affect our score, to affect our performance in a positive manner and do better,” Kendig said. “I feel like we’ve got a lot of work to do, and I hope the team feels that way too. We will embrace the work that needs to get done, embrace the discipline of the journey and this part of the test so they can reap the rewards later.”
The Huskers open the season at Denver on Jan. 10. Nebraska’s home opener is Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. against Penn State at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Nebraska hosts the 2009 NCAA Championships April 16-18.
