Lincoln ? A longtime member of the Nebraska baseball staff will be honored this weekend, as baseball secretary Renee Brinkman is being honored in St. Louis by the Midwest Scouts Association.
Brinkmann, who is in her 22nd year on the Husker baseball staff, will receive the organization’s special achievement award at the annual Midwest Scouting Association Dinner in St. Louis. The honor is presented for people outside the baseball scouting community for their assistance in advancing the scouting profession.
“I’m very excited about it,” Brinkmann said after learning of the honor. “To be honest, I was shocked when I found out. We usually don’t get recognized for awards like this, and I am truly honored. Our philosophy is to be organized and help them as much as we can in their jobs.”
According to Mike Grouse, who currently serves as a cross checker with the Texas Rangers, the group wanted to honor Brinkmann’s long-time efforts in helping the scouts in the region.
“I’ve scouted the area since 1990, and have known Renee since then, and she is well-deserving of this honor,” Grouse said. “She is very professional and goes out of her way to help the scouts in Midwest with the information they need. As soon as the coaches know, she informs us so we can make any needed changes, and we don’t need to double-check items. The work she does for us is huge.”
Nebraska Coach Mike Anderson said that the honor is well-deserved for Brinkmann, who is the longest-tenured member of the Husker baseball staff. In addition to dealing with professional scouts, she coordinates team travel and serves as the liaison to the Husker Home Run Club, the Nebraska Baseball Academy and outreach efforts, including Baseball 101.
“We’re thrilled for the recognition that Renee has received beyond our university setting,” Anderson said. “It demonstrates her strong commitment to service, and her caring about our student-athletes. We are fortunate to have her on staff because of the character and integrity she shows every day. Our players understand that she has their best interests at heart and that is why everyone has so much respect for her.”
