Senior, Linebacker
On the play of the linebackers
“It hasn’t been too good. We’ve had too many busted assignments. Everyone is not on the same page. Everyone is not communicating. Just overall, it hasn’t been good. It has to pick up for this team and the defense to be successful.”
On the injuries to Nebraska’s linebackers hurting their performance
“It’s done quite a bit with the chemistry, having the same guys in there throughout fall camp and the first couple games and then have a couple guys go out here and there, especially with Phil (Dillard). Phil is the MLB, so he’s more vocal and the guy we look to him for the call. With him out, it’s a big loss.”
On taking on more of a leadership role with the injuries to the linebackers
“I kind of have to. I’m not the MLB, so I don’t make all the calls. I make sure that everyone is communicating and is on the same page.”
On the demeanor of Coach Bo Pelini
“He’s trying to get the problems fixed and fix things going on during the game. I don’t think he’s attacking the person or yelling at them, he’s just trying to get the problem fixed. We might have someone that’s not on the same page as everyone else. He’s a players’ coach. He’s not going to attack the player, too. He’s going to let the position coaches know what he messed up and that we need to get him fixed.”
On being asked about Coach Pelini’s displays
“I haven’t really heard anyone say that. No one really asks me that. They ask me what type a coach is Coach Bo (Pelini) all the time, but they never ask why he yells all the time.”
On the decision by Coach Pelini to not make players available to the media following the Oklahoma game
“He’s been around for a long time. It was what he felt was best for the team. I don’t know his reason behind it, but that’s what he wanted to do. As players, we support his decision.”
On the offense of Kansas
“They’re a good offense. They like to throw it around. They have some good players and a good quarterback. It’s another challenge ahead of us that we can take and make the best of. We only have three more left in the regular season, so we have to take advantage of all of them. This is just the next challenge we face, but it’s a good one.”
On KU’s spread offense
“All different spread offenses that we’ve faced are different in their own sense, but they all are the same, also. They all have four or five wide receivers. They run all the same routes, but maybe out of different formations. It’s pretty much the same, just a bunch of receivers running around. We have a good game plan for it and we feel comfortable about stopping them.”
On the execution of the team
“It’s always about us. Talking to Coach (Mike) Ekeler, he said he’s never been around where you can look at the film and see that every single play has a mistake on it. That’s what happened this past weekend. We fix our mistakes. That’s something we’ve been saying since the first game. It’s just something we really need to take care of and we haven’t in the past couple weeks. If we get those fixed, we should be fine. We should win the next three easily.”
On the ability of Nebraska to bounce back from losses this season
“Coach has preached to us every day about taking it one play at a time, one game at a time, one opponent at a time. That’s our motto. We don’t think about the Oklahoma game, the Missouri game, the Virginia Tech game or the Texas Tech game, any of the games we lost. We just think about our next opponent, which is Kansas right now. That’s just kind of our focus and mindset. That’s how we don’t fall like we did last year into that snowball effect where we start losing two, three, four games. (This year), we just put that behind us and move ahead.”
On using last year’s Kansas game to help the team bounce back
“We understand what happened last year. We’re not going to let it happen again. Coming off a loss like that, we really want to come out and make a statement, play hard and get a win. Kansas happens to be the next team on our schedule coming off a poor performance against Oklahoma, so everyone will be anxious to get out, play and prove to everyone what we can do and get back on the winning track.”
On staying on an even keel mentally during an up and down year
“It’s tough, especially for young guys who haven’t been through it before or who have been through it a couple times. You don’t know how to handle it at first, being a young guy. As you get older and go through it, you understand how to handle it. You just go with the flow and understand that you can’t let negative things get you down and just keep looking forward.”
On the three-game stretch to close the regular season
“The last three games are extremely important to us. We have to win one to go to a bowl game. With the pride we have in that locker room and with that “N” on the side of the helmet, we want to win all three of them. We look at it as a new season for us, as a three-game season, and we want to go 3-0.”
