Irvin and Kelsey Lead Alumni Past Huskers

Lincoln - The Nebraska swimming and diving team welcomed back more than 15 Husker alumni at the 2008 Alumni Meet at the Devaney Natatorium on Saturday morning. Led by former men's swimmer Mike Irvin (1986-89), who had four victories in the meet, the Alumni defeated the current Huskers 127-109.

Irvin had wins in the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard IM and the 100-yard breaststroke, going a perfect four-for-four in the events he entered on the day. Husker alum Allan Kelsey (1992-93) had three wins of his own, in the 50-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle and the 25-yard freestyle.

The meet brought back former swimmers of all ages, from current undergraduate coach and 2008 alum Lynn Siemert to Bucky Greenberg, who returned to the pool after swimming at Nebraska 60 years ago.

Sophomore Brandie Kavalec had the lone win for the current Huskers on the day, as she came in first in the 50-yard breaststroke. Hailey Dean had a pair of second-place finishes while both Karen Criss and Mariah Hutchinson had a second- and a third- place finish.

The Huskers begin their regular season next week when they travel to take on Big Ten foe Illinois on Oct. 10 in Champaign, Ill. Action returns to the Devaney Natatorium on Nov. 20, when Nebraska hosts the four-day Husker Invitational from the 20th to the 23rd.
