Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer
Opening Statement
"I just told our football team that we’ve got to learn from this one, because we kind of had them a couple times. They did some good things, and give them credit, because they battled back, and they kept battling. A couple times I thought we had it, and we didn’t have it. They got that one score on the punt return and then took the ball down the field on our defense. But I think there are some great things. Again, it’s a team that battled, hangs in there and gives all the effort you could ever want. The key for us is, do we continue to get better, because I think we’re a better football team than we were a few weeks ago, but we’ve got some things to do, certainly. A proud win, coming in here when this team is as emotional as they were, and I thought they played tough. I thought they really played tough and it’s just a great win for the ACC and for Virginia Tech."
On how personal foul penalties and late hits have helped the team three consecutive weeks
"It looked like to me he did hit the guy out of bounds, but I was all the way across the field. That’s a tough call to get. I hope it was an accurate call, and I think it was."
On the great start Virginia Tech got off to
"So many times, though, I can tell you it’s such a roller coaster. So many times during that ball game, I thought we were in good shape, then all of a sudden, they come back down the field and we’re not in good shape. A lot of credit goes to them and their never-give-up attitude and their tough-mindedness. But I’ve got to be proud of our football team, we found a way to get it done."
On the development of quarterback Tyrod Taylor
"He’s getting better just like our football team. He can hurt you. A couple times he made a guy miss, and now he’s throwing the ball down the field. He made a couple of good runs. He can hurt you, and that’s what Tyrod brings to the table."
On the special teams’ play
"We had a pretty good punt return, and a blocked kick, (and) our field goals were great. You think about that ball game, though, if they don’t get their punt return, that thing is probably over. So they did some good things, too. I was proud of our special teams. I think when you’re playing a good football team, and Nebraska’s a good football team, you better be good in your special teams."
On his team’s ability to close out games
"I think when you’ve got a bunch of young kids in your dressing room, and they’re experiencing winning in the fourth quarter, that’s a great experience for them, and good for our football team."
