Lincoln- Nebraska will welcome some of the top women’s gymnastics teams in the nation to the Bob Devaney Sports Center during the regular season in preparation for hosting the 2009 NCAA Championships, NU Coach Dan Kendig announced with the release of the Huskers’ 2009 schedule on Friday.
Nebraska will welcome Utah, Oklahoma, Penn State and Iowa State to the Devaney Center for regular-season duals in 2009, along with playing host to UCLA and NC State at the Masters Classic.
Nebraska, which has reached the NCAA Championships nine of the last 10 years, will prepare for the NCAA Championships by hosting national powerhouses Utah and UCLA. Utah, a five-time national champion, comes to the Devaney Center on Feb. 13. UCLA, which captured the 2003 NCAA team title at the Devaney Center, will face the Huskers on Feb. 22.
The Huskers return three-time All-American senior Tricia Woo and welcome back All-American junior Kylie Stone and senior Brittany Williams, who both missed the entire 2008 season. Nebraska also boasts an impressive collection of experienced competitors in all events as well as a host of newcomers to the squad.
Overall, the Huskers open their home campaign against Penn State on Jan. 30 at the Devaney Center. They will then prepare for a duel with 2008 Big 12 champion Oklahoma on Feb. 8. NCAA runner-up Utah comes to the Devaney Center on Feb. 13, and the Huskers welcome NC State and UCLA on Feb. 22 for the Masters Classic. Nebraska will then face Big 12 rival Iowa State in the final home meet of the season on March 8.
Nebraska opens the season against Denver, which ended the 2008 season ranked No. 13 nationally, in Denver on Jan. 10. The Huskers will then prepare for back-to-back Big 12 match-ups with Iowa State in Ames on Jan. 16, and Missouri in Columbia on Jan. 23, which finished in the No.18 spot nationally in 2008. Michigan, which closed 2008 ranked fifth, will welcome Nebraska to Ann Arbor on Feb. 28. The Huskers will travel to Tempe, Ariz., on March 13 to challenge Arizona State, which ended last season at No. 19 in the national rankings. The Huskers then head to Los Angeles for a second battle with UCLA on March 15.
The Huskers will face four opponents that finished the 2008 season ranked in the top 10, including national powerhouses Utah and UCLA. Nebraska will also face top 10 teams Oklahoma and Michigan along with five teams that finished 2008 in the top 25.
