Lincoln - Two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American Imke Reimers earned a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for women's spring sports, the National Collegiate Athletic Association announced on Wednesday.
A standout on Coach Scott Jacobson's Nebraska women's tennis team, Reimers will receive a $7,500 postgraduate award for excellence in competition, in the classroom and in the community.
Reimers, a native of Papenburg, Germany, earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from the University of Nebraska in May after carrying an impressive 3.98 grade-point average. Earlier this month, she became the first two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American in the history of Husker women's tennis, after earning first-team honors in 2008.
She was a three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 Conference selection, and claimed a spot on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll in all eight of her undergraduate semesters at Nebraska. She plans to continue her education by pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota in August.
Along with her remarkable success in the classroom, Reimers capped one of the most successful careers in Nebraska women’s tennis history in 2008. She finished her career ranked No. 1 on NU’s career doubles victory list, and No. 2 in both the career singles wins and combined victories. Reimers became just the third Husker to ever advance to the NCAA Singles Tournament in 2007, and was twice named to both the All-Big 12 Singles and Doubles teams.
Reimers became the fifth Husker student-athlete in 2007-08 to win a coveted NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, joining Sarah Pavan, Christina Houghtelling and Tracy Stalls from the NU volleyball team and Stephen Tetrault from the men's gymnastics program.
The NCAA awards a total of 174 postgraduate scholarships each year, 87 for men and 87 for women, across all sports and all divisions of NCAA athletics. The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship program began in 1964.
