Weatherholt to Graduate Early and Join Huskers this Fall

The Nebraska women's tennis team received a pleasant surprise this week as recruit Mary Weatherholt has chosen to graduate high school one year early and begin competing for the Huskers this coming August. Weatherholt will be the highest ranked American-born player to ever play tennis at Nebraska.

"Needless to say, we are very excited and honored by Mary's decision to become a member of our Husker family this coming August," Coach Scott Jacobson said. "She is a tremendous talent, and we believe her greatest tennis will be played right here at the University of Nebraska."

Weatherholt's credentials are incredibly impressive. Weatherholt, who hails from Shawnee Mission, Kan. and attends Shawnee Mission South, is currently ranked No. 1 in the 16-and-under Missouri Valley section. In addition she is ranked No. 1 in the entire Plains region and is the top-ranked player in the state of Kansas. In 2006, Weatherholt was the Class 6A state high school singles champion.

This past January, Weatherholt placed 3rd in the prestigious USTA Girls 16-and-under Winter National Championships. Weatherholt is a five-star prospect on Tennisrecruiting.net, and maintains a national ranking of 28 in the 18-and-under division.

"Not only is Mary a very gifted singles player but has tremendous doubles instincts as well," Jacobson said. "We are fortunate to be getting a great tennis player and even more fortunate to be receiving an incredible young lady. She will be a tremendous role model for the University of Nebraska and our Husker family."
