Defensive back David Whitmore was the first out-of-state player to commit to join the Huskers' 2008 class, announcing his intentions in April of 2007. He was the first of nine Texans to join Nebraska's class, NU's largest one-year signing group from the LoneStarState. The 6-2, 185-pound Whitmore starred as a cornerback for Coach Ronnie Thompson at MemorialHigh School in Port  Arthur, Texas. As a senior, opposing teams often avoided Whitmore's side of the field, but he made enough plays in the secondary to earn honorable-mention all-district honors in the Class 5A ranks. Whitmore had a breakout season as a junior, making 90 tackles, intercepting two passes and breaking up 13 more, helping Memorial High to a 6-5 record and a tie for first place in the district. Whitmore was named to the Austin-American Statesman's Fabulous 55 in Texas, and is highly regarded by recruiting services. He is ranked among the top 50 prospects overall in the state of Texas according to Rivals.com and among the top 70 players in the Southwest region by SuperPrep Magazine. He is also a consensus choice as one of the nation's top 25 cornerback prospects. Whitmore also received offers from Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Missouri. He is the son of David Whitmore Sr. and Pansy Whitmore, and was born on Nov. 13, 1989. His father played in the NFL as a defensive back for six seasons from 1990 to 1995. David Sr. played for the Giants, 49ers, Chiefs and Eagles during his career and was a member of New York's 1990 Super Bowl champion team.
